"We are busy trying to get hold of the Vice Chancellor. Once we have managed to reach the VC, we will be able to schedule when negotiations are going to start," said Hlongwa.

Dramatic scenes unfolded on the varsity's Westville and Howard College campuses yesterday. Students gathered to protest over the poor condition of some residences, exam exclusions and NSFAS issues.

Groups of students and Public Order Police were seen clashing in video footage shared online.

Hlongwa says they want to resolve these issues as soon as possible.

"Last week we met, but there was no decision taken on the basis that the Vice Chancellor was not there. At UKZN, decisions can only be made and implemented when the VC is there. When the VC is not there, you should not even consider that meeting."
