UKZN students determined to continue protest
Updated | By Nushera Soodyal
Students who have been protesting at UKZN’s Westville campus this week say the arrest of peers has made them more determined to continue their fight for better living conditions.
Some 30 students were arrested in the unrest on the campus this week. They are facing charges of public violence and damage to property. These students have told Newswatch the protest action was not meant to be violent.
"When we came down police allowed us to pass through because we were not violent then we suddenly heard a stun grenade go off and that is when chaos began", said one student.
"We have no choice but to fight back as police coming at us with tear gas. If one of us is unlucky we get arrested", said another.
UKZN management says it will continue to engage with student leadership in an effort to resolve the issues.
