UKZN protest: Students affected as lectures cancelled

Fears grow of possible protest action at UKZN Durban campuses

Confusion reigns at UKZN campuses after initial reports that the university's academic programme would resume today.

Earlier this week, university management suspended classes at the university's Pietermaritzburg campus after sporadic incidents of protests at some campuses.

This is reportedly linked to students' fears of a fee increase for the 2017 academic year.

The Department Of Higher Education is yet to make an announcement on fee increases for 2017.

Final year Media Marketing student at UKZN's Howard College campus, Laila Sheik says talk of protest action has really interfered with her study year.

Meanwhile, students at the Westville campus say they are disappointed with the SRC - for waiting to address their concerns regarding fee increases after violence broke out in Pietermaritzburg.

A large crowd of students gathered at the university's Westville campus to meet with SRC leadership today.
