The Hawks have arrested the alleged masterminds of an apparent syndicate said to have been selling space to study at the medical school to students who did not meet the admission criteria.

Couple - Varsha and Hiteshkumar Bhatt and Preshni Hiramun were granted bail earlier this month and are due back in court at the end August.

A number of staff members have also been implicated in the scandal.

Vice-Chancellor Albert Van Jaarsveld, says the have learnt a hard lesson from this.

"We need to make sure that we put in place the necessary separation of duties; to make sure that we do not have one person that does too much or too broader a span of control in terms of the process. 'We are trying to put these remedies in place sooner rather then later -  as best as we possibly can. Anybody that has gained unlawful admission to the university or demonstrated to be [have been] part of that process will be prosecuted through the criminal justice system,"he said.
