The eight and 10-year-old pupils were in a school bus that collided with a truck on Ohrtmann Road, in the Willowton area, on Monday.

The bus, believed to have been transporting 15 pupils, was heading to the Jika Joe informal settlement at the time.

Emergency responders from Mi7 National Group EMS say the two children were declared dead on the scene.

Spokesperson Brandon Drinkwater says the jaws of life were used to free another pupil and the bus driver, who were trapped in the vehicle.

"The rest were all moderate to minor injuries. The scene when we arrived was absolutely chaotic. There were people everywhere. Family members had already started hearing about the incident and they started coming to the scene.

“The balance of the road was being blocked off by the bus as well as school children that had now made their way our of the vehicle to try and seek help from bystanders."

The cause of the crash is being probed.
