The driver allegedly lost control of the vehicle along Commercial Road early this morning.

"ER24 personnel were called to the scene shortly after 4.15am to find the SAPS search and rescue services already in attendance," ER24's Russel Meiring said.

The light motor vehicle was found in the middle of the river.

"Once retrieved, paramedics found that a woman believed to be in her 20s had already succumbed to her injuries."

Police are investigating a case of culpable homicide.

"We have opened a case of culpable homicide in the Mountain Rise police station after a vehicle lunged into the Msunduzi River. The passenger drowned, and the driver [survived] and was taken to hospital," the police's Thulani Zwane said.

Meiring says during the search, the police's K9 Unit found another vehicle in the water. An inquest docket has been opened.

"Sometime later, the SAPS search and rescue K9 alerted the authorities to a body that was found approximately 10-metres away. ER24 personnel were called to the scene before 7am again where they had found the body of a man that had been there for some time," Meiring said.

Meiring adds that he was pronounced dead on the scene.
