Police are investigating after the body of a woman was found in an abandoned building in the Ottawa area in Verulam, north of Durban, yesterday.
A critically injured man was also found in the building.
Emergency services say the woman - believed to be a prostitute - had sustained a single gunshot wound to the head.
Police spokesperson Nqobile Gwala says an inquest docket and case of murder has been opened.
"Next to the body a firearm was also found. One of the victims passed away at the scene and the other one was taken to hospital for medical attention - where he later died. Charges of inquest and murder were open for investigation at Verulam police," she said.
Meanwhile, Pietermaritzburg police have also opened an inquest docket and are investigating the failure to safeguard a firearm - after a 15-year-old girl was found with a gunshot wound to the stomach at her home in the Edendale area on Saturday afternoon.
Gwala says a firearm was found lying next to the victim.
