Two arrested for Phoenix Plaza jewellery store robberies
Updated | By Lauren Beukes
Police have vowed more arrests after a heavily armed gang hit two jewellery stores at the Phoenix Plaza, north of Durban this week.
They have arrested two men at a property in KwaMashu.
KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Jay Naicker says jewellery, two firearms, ammunition and a speed point machine were also found.
"During a search, various items of jewellery, two firearms, 10 rounds of ammunition and a speed point machine were found in the suspects possession. In a follow-up operation, two vehicles believed to have been used during the robberies were seized by police."
"The two men, aged 21 and 26, were detained at the Phoenix police station on two counts of robbery as well as unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition charges.
"They are expected to appear in court soon. Investigations are ongoing and more arrests can be expected."
The gunmen opened fire on police as they fled the shopping centre on Monday.
Officers say some bystanders who witnessed the double robbery then looted both the jewellery stores.
