Kerzner died at his Cape Town home on Saturday at the age of 84. He'd been battling cancer.

Film producer and friend, Anant Singh has been paying tribute to the founder of Southern Sun and Sun International groups.

"He was such a humble person in the achievements that he did - he didn't talk much about it, but he built properties in Dubai, the Bahamas, the United States and in Mexico and in South Africa, but at the end of the day he loved his family and friends."

Kerzner began building his business empire in Durban by buying the Astra Hotel in the 60s.

He then went on to build other establishments including the Beverly Hills Hotel in Umhlanga which became the first five-star hotel in the country - the Elangeni Hotel on the Durban Beachfront and the Sun City Resort.

Singh says Kerzner, who grew up in the Johannesburg suburb of Troyville, was a role model. He says he saw him recently.

"The last time I saw him - which was about three weeks ago - we went for ice cream together, and we talked about Troyville, and he never forgot his roots and friends."
