Transport MEC says officials prioritising taxi-related violence
Updated | By Nushera Soodyal
The MEC for Community Safety and Transport says bringing stability to KZN areas rocked by taxi-related violence remains a priority.
Mxolisi Kaunda joined Police Minister, Bheki Cele during a visit to Durban' Brook Street taxi rank yesterday - where there was a deadly shooting on Friday.
"We are still continuing to engage with these issuses as the minister has alluded to. There are many areas that are cause for concern. We are addressing issues related to taxi operations," Kaunda said.
A 56-year-old man died following the shooting while two people were wounded.
The suspects - who fled in minibus - were traced to New Germany where a shootout with officers took place.
Sixteen suspects were later arrested and 17 firearms seized.
A provincial task team is investigating Friday's shooting.
