The N3 Toll Concession says traffic volumes heading from Gauteng towards Durban peaked at around 1 900 vehicles per hour through the Mooi River Toll Plaza.

The concession’s Con Roux says apart from a crash at Villiers in the Free State - traffic flow remained relatively smooth. Roux says the highway’s busiest day of the year is still to come.

"We're expecting today and Sunday to be very quiet - obviously, most holidaymakers are at their destinations already. Monday is the busiest day of the year on the N3, particularly from 11am right through to the afternoon," Roux said.

Those travelling on Monday are being advised to be on the road as early as possible.

"Some advice to motorists is to leave the Durban area as early as possible - being at 6am or 7am. In that way, traffic would be avoided," Roux said.

Meanwhile - some 45 people were arrested for drink driving in and around Durban when the Easter long weekend kicked-off on Thursday evening.

Durban Metro Police say roadblocks and visible policing efforts will continue throughout the weekend.

Spokesperson, Parboo Sewpersad is urging members of the public to behave responsibly.

Sewpersad says the holiday period has gotten off to a relatively good start in the city – with no major incidents reported.

"There's been a lot of good behaviour on the beachfront with night revellers and people going to the beach. They have put on their best behaviour. There have been no incidents, whatsoever. We hope it remains the same for the entire Easter weekend," Sewpersad.
