Residents in Amanzimtoti, south of Durban, have raised concerns over the danger posed by cattle being herded through public roads.

"There are herdsmen with them but they are walking across the street, they're in people's gardens, on the sidewalk and they are a major hazard."

Chris Fourie, a chaplain from the Brotherhood of Believers Ministries, says the situation is becoming dangerous.

He said he had to swerve to avoid a herd of around 25 cows crossing Lewis Drive on Thursday, narrowly avoiding a serious accident.

Fourie has urged eThekwini Metro Police to enforce municipal by-laws before someone is seriously injured or killed.

"  It's been going on for quite a while, but I've been in Toti now for four years and once a week you see them."

They sometimes they were even on the highway on the N2, close to the Seadoone and Winklespruit off ramp been going on for years and I think the people just like accept it as a norm, but,  because we in the bikers ministry, it's very dangerous for a bike.

"If you hit a cow, the chance that you're going make it is not very high," said Fourie.
