The
total cost of the floods that devastated parts of KZN this month is estimated
to be higher than R17 billion.
Premier Sihle Zikalala says R955 million will need to go to passenger rail agency Prasa to repair and rebuild rail infrastructure damaged during the disaster.
"As we continue the mop-up operations, these will be revised upward or downward. Overall it is now estimated that the large expenditure on the rehabilitation will come from Prasa related to the infrastructure.”
Zikalala was delivering an update on government's response to the catastrophic floods during a media briefing in Mayville on Sunday.

He said eThekwini will need more than R2 billion and Ugu R1.9 billion for repairs.
The premier says while most roads in the province have reopened, motorists should expect delays in some areas where routes were badly affected.
"Sanral has already dispatched consultants to conduct assessment on our strategic routes such as M4 in eThewkini, R102 between eThekwini and kDakuza, R102 GJ Crookes, Ntuzuma access road, Thendele Drive P457 amongst many other critical routes that have been considered.”
