Toll-free service for gender-based violence victims

The Social Development Department is urging victims of gender-based violence to make use of their 24-hour toll-free call centre service.

The initiative started out as a pilot project in three provinces and is now operating in six - including here in KwaZulu-Natal.

Professional social workers are on hand to link victims with other services including police and health services.

The Department's Spokesperson Lumka Oliphant says calls or please-call-mes can be made from anywhere in the country without the caller disclosing their address as the service can geo-locate individuals if necessary.

"In the past three weeks it has won several international awards as best practice and best innovation.

"As we're going into 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children we're saying this centre is there for women to use the number and be able to get services or they can send a please-call-me and a social worker will be at your service," she said.

Contact 0800 428 428 or dial *120*7867 # to get in touch with the call centre.
