Toddler repatriated from Senegal after mother jailed
Updated | By Celumusa Zulu
The Department of Social Development says it has successfully repatriated a child whose mother has been jailed in Senegal.
The woman, formerly from the Eastern Cape, was arrested in February last year on charges of human trafficking.
Days after being imprisoned in Dakar, she delivered a baby girl.
The department's Lumka Oliphant says social workers landed with the 1-year-old at OR Tambo International Airport on Sunday.
She says the child's in the care of her grandmother.

"The government of South Africa, through the Department of International Relations and Cooperation, initiated the process of repatriating the child by first visiting the mother to ascertain wishes about the child.
“The mother nominated her grandmother as a guardian in the country. Since 2015, the government has repatriated 21 children who were distressed in foreign countries."
