Three KZN Eskom contractors behind bars for illegal connections

Three electricians contracted to Eskom in northern KwaZulu-Natal are behind bars.

The utility says the trio, caught red-handed, was allegedly installing illegal electricity connections in Newcastle.


The suspects were working on Eskom infrastructure near the Theku Plaza in Osizweni area on Friday.


When questioned by Eskom field operators, the power producer's Nozipho Mpanza says they initially claimed to be doing legitimate work.


But closer inspections revealed that wasn't the case.


The contractors lined up in court on Monday.


She says electricity theft costs the utility close to R2 billion a year.


"We'd like to request the communities to assist us in combating illegal activities that are happening in our networks, these activities are exposing kids and everyone else to unsafe conditions.


"We'd also like to request that communities make sure that your electricity supply is legal and you are paying for electricity. This help you not to become part of the electricity theft as it can be legally charged by the court of law."
