Take advantage of National Wills Week
Updated | By Lethiwe Mdluli
This week marks National Wills Weeks in South Africa and the public is being encouraged to go and have their basic will drafted at selected law firms around the country.
A will is suited for or everyone, especially if you have property, children, are married, have assets and prized belongings.
MS Hadebe from Nompumelelo Hadebe Inc says they are drafting free wills as a form of giving back to the community.
According to the Law Society of South Africa, its important to get a will as you ensure that your assets are disposed of in accordance with your wishes after your death. This privilege is called "freedom of testation".
The law society says the following problems may arise if you die without a will.
Your assets may not be left to the person of your choice.
It can take a long time to have an executor appointed.
The executor who is appointed may be somebody you may not have chosen yourself.
There can be extra and unnecessary costs.
There can be unhappiness and conflict among members of your family because there are no clear instructions on how to distribute your assets.
LSSA says your assets will be distributed according to the provisions of the Intestate Succession Act - if you die without a will. The Act ensures that possessions are transferred to your spouse and children.
