Sweet deal for canegrowers association, Shoprite
Updated | By Nondumiso Dube
The South African Canegrowers Association has teamed up with a major retailer to produce local sugar.
CEO Thomas Funke says the initiative with Shoprite is part of its Home Sweet Home campaign.
"Shoprite's substantial national footprint will bring much-needed attention to the campaign reaching consumers exactly where they need this information most and that is in the shopping aisles."
The retailer's committed to stocking only locally-produced sugar on the shelves of all its shops to help save jobs.
He says the sugar industry's faced serious challenges over the past decade, one of them being the introduction of the sugar tax.
"We are hopeful that Shoprite's commitment will encourage other retailers and industry stakeholders to take active steps to ensure the success of sugar industry master plan and to protect the one million livelihoods depending on local SA sugar."
