KwaZulu-Natal police say they are hot on the heels of two people who managed to escape as officers attempted to arrest them for allegedly tampering with cell phone tower batteries in Estcourt.
Officers
tracked down the suspects after receiving information on their whereabouts.
They proceeded to Nyezane in Amangwe over the weekend.
As they approached the suspects, they were met by a hail of bullets, leading to an exchange of gunfire.
One of the suspects was shot dead and two were arrested.
"A pistol with three rounds of ammunition, two vehicles, an angle grinder and a crowbar was found from the suspects,” says police spokesperson Nqobile Gwala.
Police are still searching for the remaining suspects who managed to flee the scene.
“Two suspects, aged 26 and 35, have appeared before the Estcourt Magistrate Court this morning on charges of attempted murder, unlawful possession of firearm, ammunition and tampering with essential infrastructure,” says Gwala.
