Suspected Durban gang boss arrested for attempted murder

Two suspects are due in court for their alleged part in the attempted murder of a Durban metro police official.

The Hawks say the 62-year-old victim was brutally assaulted on Saturday while on his way to a place of worship in Verulam.


The elderly man is in critical condition in hospital. 


Spokesperson Simphiwe Mhlongo says the Anti-Gang Unit arrested the suspects on Wednesday.


"A joint operation was conducted, and the main suspect was arrested in Verulam and charged with attempted murder. Members proceeded to Ballito where the second suspect was arrested.

"During his arrest, he was found in possession of a firearm with live rounds of ammunition. He was further charged with unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition.


"His arrest led the members to a certain house in KwaDukuza where five firearms were recovered. A 45-year-old suspect who was found in the house was arrested and charged with unlawful possession of a firearm as well as ammunition. 


"The seized firearms will be sent for ballistic test to ascertain if they were used in the commission of any crime in the country."
