Bonginkosi Madondo, was arrested in Johannesburg earlier this month and appeared in the northern KwaZulu-Natal court for the first time on June 9.

He was allegedly involved in the 2012 murder of Isaac Nhlebela.

The ward councillor was gunned down on Nquthu Road near Hazeldene Farm while waiting for a farm gate to open.

Thirty-four-year-old Khawulani Mkhize pleaded guilty to the crime and is already serving jail time.

Hawks spokesperson, Simphiwe Mhlongo says the latest arrest is a breakthrough when it comes to political killings in the province.

"Madondo's accomplice was arrested in 2012 and was sentenced to 18 years imprisonment. We were following some information about him because during the trial of Khawulani Mkhize, who was sentenced to 18 years - it appeared that he was also involved in this murder case and a warrant of arrest was issued and we were following him since then," he said.
