Striking e-hailing drivers calls on govt to intervene in ‘exploitative’ sector
Updated | By Gcinokuhle Malinga
An organisation representing drivers at various
e-hailing companies says their ongoing strike is fuelled by frustrations over
several issues.
Some drivers embarked on a national strike on Monday.
The organisation 'Unity in Diversity' says drivers want solutions to issues around their safety, the prices of rides, rising fuel expenses, and the high commission their employers take.
Spokesperson Vhathuka Mbelengwa has called on the government to intervene.

"Our hope is for the industry to be regulated, and within a regulated environment, we can see a healthy industry emerge with sustainable opportunities, and we can see exploitation eradicated.
“We would like to see the people who administer the service within this industry be the people who take home the most money from each trip they administer."
In a statement sent to ECR Newswatch, Uber SA said they're aware of the ongoing strike and have reached out to drivers in an attempt to understand their concerns.
