Stricter law enforcement needed for drunk drivers: AA

The Automobile Association says it supports the Transport Minister's call for improved law enforcement to deal with drunk driving.

Fikile Mbalula wants Parliament this year, to greenlight a bill that introduces a 0% alcohol limit for all motorists. 


He says drunk drivers cost the country's economy around 18 billion rand annually. 


The AA's Layton Beard says strict enforcement is needed, "Unless those existing laws are enforced through tougher law enforcement's and proper prosecution, past penalties for offenders."

"The law can say whatever it wants but it won't necessarily change the behaviour of those who want to drink and drive." 


"Stricter penalties and proper law enforcement's of the existing laws will do that," he said. 


Beard says people need to understand that drunk driving is a serious crime.


"There is a vast deep need for an intensive education at school level and beyond to educate the public of South Africa on the need for road safety and the danger of disobeying the laws."
