Stricter gun control measures needed: Parliament Committee
Updated | By Sandile Zikhali
Parliament's Portfolio Committee on Police says a new, targeted enforcement plan is needed to get illegal firearms off the streets.
It has raised concerned over the use of firearms in violent crimes, in many cases these weapons are found to have been obtained illegally.
The committee's Francois Beukman says stricter control measures within the SAPS would help reduce the number of illegal firearms in circulation.
He says they have also been considering the idea of a gun amnesty for some time now.
"Any illegal gun must be handed in to authorities. The issue of amnesty has been on the table for the last year or two. The portfolio committee supports amnesty where people can hand in guns currently in the hands of citizens but not currently registered," he said.
