Eskom spokesperson, Dikatso Mothae says the move is as a result of the utility losing additional generation units on the system.

"We are having to move from stage two load shedding to stage four as of 2pm today, and this is likely to continue till 6am tomorrow which is Saturday morning," she said.

She says some of the units that were out for planned maintenance have also not been brought back.

Mothae says load shedding is necessary to avoid a total blackout.

"It's a controlled measure, and beyond stage four, we can move on to the next stage and the next. That's not to say that is where we want to go, but that is something that is available for us to do if the situation deteriorates."

We do not believe that we need to go into any further stages at this point," she said.

Consumers are being reminded to reduce their electricity unit.
