South Africans pay tribute to Jean De Villiers

Many South Africans have described Springboks skipper Jean de Villiers, who yesterday retired from international rugby, as a true warrior and one of the country's best rugby captains.

It was also announced earlier that de Villiers had been ruled out of the 2015 Rugby World Cup after he had suffered a fractured jaw in our 46-6 victory over Samoa on Saturday.

Sports Minister Fikile Mbalula's paid tribute to the Bok-centre saying he has been the glue that held the Springboks together.

Meanwhile, Durbanites have praised the Boks for making a come-back from their unexpected loss to Japan in their opening game two weekends ago.

A few fans spoke to Newswatch after Saturday's match. A thrilled fan said returning to winning ways is a good thing.

"I'm happy for the players because it must have been very tough over the last week. They've been very slick," he said.

One of them explained what he thinks is the reason for suffering a defeat at the hands of the Japanese.

"I think the team largely underestimated Japan. That's the only explanation for losing against them and winning this game," he said.

A delighted fan says the team is much stronger now.

"I think they had regrouped. They always come stronger the next time and I think they had a time to reconsolidate," he said.

A guy who watched the match say South Africa won against a good side.

"Samoa is a good team. We've always battled against them but this is different. This was overwhelming," he said.
