The affected beaches in Central Durban were closed to the public after officials conducted tests which showed beyond normal E-coli levels with some of the water turning murky.

eThekwini spokesperson, Msawakhe Mayisela, says there's since been significant improvement in the quality of the water at Addington, South and Ushaka beaches.

He says the three beaches are now safe for bathing and all other sporting activities. But others remain off-limits.

"North Beach, Bay of Plenty Beach and Blue Lagoon beaches remain closed but our teams are working tirelessly to have them reopened soon", Mayisela said.

"Beaches just north of the Umngeni River that were recently affected by the UPL chemical spillage are still closed and we apologise for the inconvenience to the public", he said.
