An elderly Eshowe couple, Octavia and Christopher Khumalo were shot dead in their home on Saturday, along with a 37-year-old woman and three children.

Police Minister, Bheki Cele visited the family yesterday.

Octavia's sister, Thokozani Mbatha told reporters that she’s spoken to the surviving child on Tuesday.

She says the girl told her she hid under a bed while her loved ones were being shot dead in another room.

Mbatha says the child began trembling and crying uncontrollably as she recounted the ordeal.

She says the child told her that the assailant questioned the family about Christopher's son, who died in 2019.

"My brother-in-law ran to the bathroom. The suspect used an axe and broke down and he shot him. He then approached the family in another room. He asked the questioned, "who killed my brother-in-law's son?". My brother-in-law's son died last year.

He interviewed the daughter, Mbali and he said, 'Are you still lying?' and he shot Mbali. He then called Mbali's son and asked Mbali's son, then shot the young boy."

Police have confirmed that Christopher's nephew, Stembiso Mtimkhulu has been arrested and appeared in court yesterday.

Mbatha has described him as a decent man, who carried himself professionally as a social worker.
