Slight increase in water levels at Hazelmere Dam
Updated | By Zongile Nhlapho
We're not out of the woods just yet despite a slight increase in water levels at Hazelmere Dam north of Durban.
Umgeni Water says the dam is now sitting at about 35% thanks to a slight increase in rain over the past few weeks.
The utility's Shami Harichunder says they're still unable to lift or ease water restrictions. Harichaunder says levels at the Midmar, Albert Falls and Spring Grove dams also remain below average.
He says not enough rain has fallen to alleviate the water crisis in KZN.
"We've been proactive in wanting to prevent a crisis situation in the future. The only way to prevent that situation is by consumers and municipalities now cutting back on the amount of water they use.
"If they do that at this stage, water in both Midmar and Albert Falls will last us for the next few months until the next rainfall comes," he said.
