SIU recoups R500m amid DWS probe

The Special Investigating Unit says it has recovered half a billion rand during its investigations into the Department of Water and Sanitation over the past thirteen years.

"Actual cash or asset recovered, it's R569.1 million - 2012. Potential cash and assets to be recovered we have got R264.1 million,” SIU spokesperson Zodwa Xesibe told Parliament’s watchdog committee, SCOPA on Wednesday.
Xesibe said R1.1 billion has also been set aside in relation to irregular contracts and administrative decisions.
" Potential loss prevented is R717 million. Rand value of matters referred for the institution or defence opposition of civil proceedings - we are now sitting at R6.2 billion."

Last month, the SIU began its probe into allegations of maladministration at eThekwini's water and sanitation services.
Earlier this year, President Cyril Ramaphosa signed a proclamation authorising an investigation into allegations of maladministration in eThekwini.
