TransHope has been reacting to the murder of Sisanda Gumede who was stabbed to death by a relative in Umbumbulu.

Police suspect the 28-year-old was killed in a homophobic attack.

Ntobizonke Dladla is with the Durban-based LGBTQIA+ group.

She says queer people often face backlash from their families for being who they are.

"What is the most scariest part is the person that Sisanda was his cousin and it fears us that how could somebody do something like this. You knew that person from birth and yet you go and assault, stab or shoot that person. So what is the reason? Aren't we all the same?"

Mhlabunzima Memela, who's with the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Social Development, says there isn't a place for hate crimes in society.

"The the moment the information before us is that the perpetrator is still at large and the MEC has appealed with the members of the community to work closely with the police to ensure that if this person is seen, they immediately report to the police so that he will get arrested.”
