Silent protest in PMB against gender-based violence
Updated | By Zongile Mthimkhulu
A silent protest is set to be held in Pietermaritzburg today, as the 16 days of Activism Campaign is launched in the country.
Lifeline Pietermaritzburg's Lungile Makhonza says they will be teaming up with the AIDS Healthcare Foundation for today's protest.
The 16 days campaign, which aims to create awareness around violence against women and children, will be marked around the world.
Makhonza says among other things today, they will be focusing on the murder trial of a staff member.
"As we proceed to the library, when we get there - we're going to do what we're calling a 'die in'.
"So, we'll lie down and pretend to be dead. The significance is that if people are silent about gender-based violence, normally the end result is death," she said.
Twenty-three-year-old Thulile Phungula suffered acid injuries and allegedly identified her ex-boyfriend as the perpetrator, before she died.
