Shock, sadness as former minister Tina Joemat-Pettersson dies

has paid tribute to the late Tina Joemat-Pettersson, saying the country's lost
a remarkable and dedicated leader.

The former energy minister died at her home in Cape Town last night at the age of 59.
The politician, who was born in Kimberley, served as the MEC for Education from 1994.
At the time of her passing, Joemat-Pettersson was an ANC Member of Parliament and chair of the Portfolio Committee on Police.
Parliament's presiding officers have also reacted with shock and sadness to Joemat-Pettersson's sudden passing.

"Recently she served as a member of the Section 194 Ad Hoc Committee and the Ad Hoc Committee on Flood Disaster Relief and Recovery," said spokesperson Moloto Mothapo.
"She will be remembered as an astute politician who used her skills, talents, and knowledge to advance legislative work to change the lives of ordinary South Africans. She exuded great energy, passion, and goodwill, and was not afraid to speak her mind."
