Seven confirmed dead in Joburg building fire

Seven people have died in a fire at the City York building in the Johannesburg CBD.
Johannesburg Emergency Service's Nana Radebe says the fire in the building on the corner Jeppe and Nugget streets broke out early this morning.
"When the first engine arrived on scene - the second floor was well alight. Seven others have been taken to hospital for smoke inhalation and other injuries. We have rescued over 50 people. For now, we are about to do preliminary investigations into the cause of the fire," she said.

It's understood one of the victims died after jumping from one of the floors in a bid to escape the blaze.
The cause of the fire is not known at this stage.
