Senzo Meyiwa trial to start in April
The five men accused of the murder of former Bafana Bafana captain Senzo Meyiwa appeared in court on Monday.
The legal representative of Meyiwa’s family says they are disappointed that the murder case will only start next year.
Meyiwa was shot and killed in 2014 in Vosloorus.
Advocate Gerrie Nel, who represents the family through AfriForum, said they were not informed about the lengthy postponement.
“We are obviously disappointed that the matter is not proceeding this year, it is now seven years since Meyiwa was killed.
"Counsel got together and they decided to postpone the matter, the court was not informed neither were we, we have no idea why this matter could not have proceeded.
“The family was not informed, we certainly hope that this is the last postponement, every family need closure.”
Nel said they are also disappointed that only five people are charged for the murder.
This while family spokesperson Sifiso Meyiwa called on President Cyril Ramaphosa to intervene.
“We know who did this, even the minister said. The president should intervene in this matter, there are those who have advised me to let it go because my brother is no more. I will not let it go and I don’t fear any person, I am very strong because I believe in God.”
The case was postponed to 11 April 2022 for trial at the Pretoria High Court.
