Sixteen-year-year-old Andile 'Bobo' Mbuthu was last seen two weeks ago in Hambanathi.

It's alleged he was beaten up at a local tavern, after being accused of stealing alcohol.

"The provincial commissioner's' office has been investigating the missing person's docket," KZN police spokesperson Jay Naicker says.

"Investigations continued through the night. This morning they proceeded to the Noodsberg Road with members of the SAPS Search and Rescue Unit. They are currently searching a river."

Family spokesperson Ntobeko Ngidi says they just want to find him.

"I can't confirm that it is him because the family didn't show us anything. But there is something that has been discovered within the river, so we are not sure whether it's him or not," says Ngidi.

Police say six people have been taken in for questioning.

Messages of condolences - under the hashtag '#RIPBobo' - have been pouring in on social media.
