School assistant payments nearing completion - Ed. Dept
Updated | By Andile Tsotetsi
The Department of Basic Education says more than 124,000 teaching and school assistants have now been paid.

This comes after the department last week - reported delays in June payments for over 200,000 school assistants across all nine provinces.
Recent teachers’ pickets in KZN over delayed school funds, and the floods in the Eastern Cape, were given as reasons for the non-payment. .
Assistants across 20,000 schools were being verified through a new central payment system.
In a statement, the department says they've managed to pay the first batch - with an additional 11,000 to be paid by Tuesday (15 July).

It says another 30,000 assistants are set for payment on the 23rd.
However, the department says verification of IDs, banking details, and attendance is ongoing to prevent fraud.
It adds July payments are on track for completion by the end of the month.
