SAWS warns of severe thunderstorms in KZN

Residents living in northern KwaZulu-Natal and the Midlands are being urged to brace themselves for severe thunderstorms.

The South African Weather Service has issued a level 2 warning for Thursday afternoon.


Disaster management teams have been activated in all municipalities likely to be affected by storms. 


The Department of Cooperative Governance in KZN says damaging winds, excessive lightning, hail, and heavy downpours are expected. 


Communities have been advised to seek shelter in a safe place and avoid travelling during this time.

As a precaution, disaster teams say they won't hesitate to carry out evacuations in areas at risk of violent storms, such as Vryheid, Ladysmith, Estcourt, Jozini and Newcastle. 


They've warned of serious threats to infrastructure, households and livestock. 


Other areas likely to be affected are Alfred Duma, Big Five Hlabisa, Hluhluwe, Dannhauser, eDumbe, eMadlangeni, Endumeni, Impendle, Inkosi Langalibalele, Maphumulo, Mpofana, Giants Castle, Mooi River, Msinga, Mthonjaneni, Mtubatuba, Nkandla, Nongoma, Nquthu, Okhahlamba, The Msunduzi, Ulundi, Umhlabuyalingana, uMhlathuze, and uMlalazi.
