SA’s debt levels ‘unsustainable’ – economist
Updated | By Nushera Soodyal
Efficient Group economist Dawie Roodt says the country's debt levels have become unsustainable.

Roodt was speaking ahead of Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana tabling his mini budget in Parliament on Wednesday.
The budget was meant to get underway last week but was postponed.
Some believe the delay was due to the state’s finances being in trouble.

"State revenue taxes are under tremendous pressure,” says Roodt.
"There is a huge demand on the expense side of the budget, and there is an election around the corner, so all of this put together makes life extremely difficult for the Minister of Finance."
"And I think part of the reason why the minister decided to postpone this is just to allow him more time to see if he can somehow find a rabbit in the hat, and I think that could be part of the reason, and that is pretty much what we need. We need a rabbit in the hat."
