Kieswetter says they'll be cracking down on non-compliance.

"Many taxpayers still do not declare rental income from properties. We will improve our data matching in this regard by collaborating with the deeds office and other sources of information. This matching will also allow us to better enforce non-compliance in the declaration of capital gains tax. We will also renew our focus to monitor income and expenditure from commission earners which creates opportunity for abuse," Kieswetter said.

SARS has officially opened its tax season.

Taxpayers using e-filing will be able to submit their tax returns from today until the 4th of December.

Those filing manually can do so from the first of August until the end of October.

SARS Commissioner, Edward Kieswetter told a press briefing in Pretoria that there's a new version of the SARS Mobi App to make filing easier and quicker.

"I can tell you - since launching it, we've already 1200 mobi-appers who have downloaded it and submitted their returns. As of 8.30am this morning, we have had 52 000 e-filers that have already filed. So it's working. This app allows easy uploading and supporting documents," Kieswetter said.
