Most police trainee applications were from Gauteng with 267 031, followed by KwaZulu-Natal at KZN with 205 802 and Limpopo with 115 877.

SAPU spokesperson Lesiba Thobakgale says the SAPS must increase trainee intake numbers to meet the high demand.

"Our wishes as SAPU is that we need to reach that mark of 10,000 per year up until SAPS has enough manpower in terms of the recommended United Nations ratio, where we are seeing our population continue to grow," said Thobakgale.

"Meaning that we need more police officers, we need more resources, and all of that is informed by the budget.

"Government must have a will to make more budget available so that SAPS can be able to address these high volumes."
