#SandtonShutdown - ANCWL demands state of emergency

The ANC Women's League believes government should declare a state of emergency against gender-based violence.

The league has joined a number of other civil society groups outside the Johannesburg Stock Exchange in Sandton this morning.

League president, Bathabile Dlamini says they are protesting against the scourge of violence against women.  They say it should not be business as usual in the country.

"Government has a right to call for a state of emergency so as to redirect its resources and focus those resources in a crisis situation," said Dlamini.

Protestors will hand over a memorandum of their grievances to officials later this morning.

A 2 percent tax on companies listed on the JSE is among their demands.

#SandtonShutdown is trending on social media.

Numerous cases of gender-based violence, including rape, murder, sexual assault and crimes against children, have grabbed headlines across the country in recent weeks.

Several protests have been staged, calling on government to take a stronger stance against gender-based violence.
