SAMA: Third Covid-19 wave will be worse

The South African Medical Association (SAMA) says tighter measures are needed to combat the country's third wave of Covid-19 infections.

SAMA feels the restrictions announced by President Cyril Ramaphosa when he announced a move to level 3 lockdown isn't enough.

The National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) has reported an increase of more than 13 000 new cases in the last past 24 hour period.

The other concern is hospital admissions.

During the same period, over 900 people were booked into medical facilities.

SAMA's Angelique Coetzee said: "When I looked at yesterday's figures and the graphs that I have seen, it's a very steep graph.

"It's not the same as the second wave and the second wave was worst than the first wave. So we predict that the third wave is going to be worse than all the other two waves and not because the virus is more virulent, it is because of the behaviour of people.

"Health care facilities that include GP practices, clinics, hospitals they should be all seen now as a Covid hotspot."
