SAMA: Calling for level 5 lockdown is 'counterproductive'
Updated | By Nushera Soodyal
The SA Medical Association says at this stage, calls for a return to a level 5 lockdown won't achieve meaningful results in the fight against Covid-19.

It says the renewed calls by various individuals and organisations are counter-productive.
SAMA says the focus should shift to strengthening health facilities and vaccinating healthcare workers.
The association's Angelique Coetzee says a return to tougher lockdown restrictions will do more harm to our already fragile economy and struggling businesses.

Coetzee believes the current regulations under alert level 3 are sufficient.
But she says medical care needs major improvements.
"To think that any further lockdown is going to change the trajectory of the virus we would say that should have to look at maybe the attending of social gatherings between 10 and 20 people - to reduce that number. Instead of having 50 people at funerals as been proposed currently," she says.
