SAHRC clears Cape Town school over 'whites only' matric ball
Updated | By Anastasi Mokgobu
The South African Human Rights Commission has cleared Brackenfell High School of discrimination following a matric dance furore that saw racism claims being made.
The Cape Town school made headlines in 2020 after a group of pupils hosted a private matric ball that happened to be attended by only white pupils.
An initial investigation by the provincial Department of Education found no evidence of wrongdoing on the part of the school.

It said the event was a private function organised by a group of pupils following the cancellation of the official event.
Human rights commissioner Andre Guam says the commission found that school officials knew about the event, as details had been shared by parents and pupils and four teachers had been invited in their private capacity.
But he says the evidence before the commission exonerates the school from planning, funding, advertising or hosting it.

Guam says the event organisers also did not directly or indirectly discriminate against pupils.
