The commission on Friday announced it'll be launching its own investigation into Tongaat's water supply disruptions.

“We have at this stage written to the municipality to request information about how they are going to be addressing the challenges in the Tongaat area,” says the commission’s Lloyd Lotz.

“We are aware that there has been a lot of infrastructure damage due to the floods. But some of the issues being raised by the residents include a lack of access to water tankers.”

Some residents' taps ran dry when their water treatment plant was severely damaged during last month's floods.

Lotz says they've been overwhelmed with complaints from the area.

He says one resident complained about falling ill, apparently after consuming the water distributed by the municipality.

”We are worried about the vulnerable groups, we are worries about the alleged unequal distribution of water, we are worried about the quality fo water and the allegations that the quality is not so good.”
