SADTU protests putting KZN pupils’ futures at risk

There are calls for the teachers’ union SADTU in KZN to delay its plans to hold protests over teacher vacancies and a lack of school resources.

The protests come as the matric finals are already in full swing.

Members of the teacher’s union took to the streets in Durban last month over a string of grievances.

Last week, SADTU announced plans to put more pressure on the KZN Department of Education after it received what it says was an unsatisfactory response from the department to its demands.

On Monday, exams for pupils between Grades 8 and 11 in the Umlazi and Pinetown districts were postponed at some schools.

The DA's Imraan Keeka feels the MEC should meet with the union.

"The DA supports SADTU's observations of poor working conditions; however, the members have the duty to ensure that the learners succeed as difficult as it may be during this time."

"Our learner's futures cannot be placed at risk."
