Sadtu calls on govt to jab children as young as five
Updated | By Lauren Beukes
Teachers unions have called on the government to speed up the rollout of its Covid-19 inoculation programme so that younger children can benefit from the vaccines too.
The South African Democratic Teachers Union's (SADTU) Mugwena Maluleke says they have been informed that children under 10 have been affected, as we experience a resurgence in cases, with some needing hospital care.
He feels the jabs should be rolled out to children as young as five-years-old.
"We cannot afford in this country to have children and their parents being admitted in hospitals when there is a solution.
"Whilst people have the right not to be vaccinated, it is our view that we need to encourage them and give them more education."
He's meanwhile urged teachers who aren't vaccinated to get their shots.
