Sacking of 300 KZN teachers a concern: Unions
Updated | By Steve Bhengu
Some teacher unions have expressed concern over the sacking of 300 KwaZulu Natal teachers as announced by MEC Mthandeni Dlungwane.
The MEC revealed that the teachers were fired for misconduct since June last year while addressing members of the Provincial Legislature.
There had been concerns over slow disciplinary action metered out by the department.
Teachers would also be suspended for lengthy periods with pay while substitute educators were brought in who were also being paid.
National Professional Teachers' Organisation of South Africa's Basil Manual says they are worried the MEC merely focused on dismissals and not so much on who will occupy the vacant positions.
"As soon as someone is removed there are children without a teacher and we have not heard if, in fact, they have ensured that these posts have been filled by credible and qualified people," he said.
