SA Presidency confident of G20 success with or without Trump

The Presidency believes the G20 Leaders Summit in Johannesburg will be a success - even if President Donald Trump decides to skip the event.

Questions were raised recently about the US leader's attendance after he reiterated concerns on social media over alleged, "land confiscation and genocide" in South Africa.

 

US Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, pulled out of a meeting of foreign ministers in South Africa two months ago.

 

The November summit is where South Africa is expected to hand the G20 presidency over to the US.

 

Speaking to reporters yesterday, the presidency's Vincent Magwenya said that they are confident the event will run smoothly.

"We believe that it is well-known that there is no white genocide taking place in the country. So, we are no longer concerned about those utterances, and they have no material impact on us as a country [and] on our image.

 

“Should he decide to attend the G20 Summit we’ll be delighted. We will roll out the red carpet like we do to all other leaders. But should he decide that he won't be attending it will not have any impact on the standing of the summit itself, as well as its envisaged outcome.”
